THIS BLOG WAS CREATED FROM THE VERY BEGINNINGS OF SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC'S FORMATION

Scarborough Athletic F.C were formed on June 25th 2007 following the winding up order imposed on the old club after the local council turned down the club's survival plans. The club were finally forced into liquidation with debts of £2.5 million by a High Court judge, and so ended the club's magnificent 128 year history, no thoughts or consideration was to be spared for anyone connected with the club or the towns footballing public. However a trust had been formed and we were prepared for such a situation should it arise. The Seadog Trust applied to the Northern Counties East League to enter newly formed Scarborough Athletic and they were succesful in their application.
The new club are a continuation of the old one, they have the same kit, badge, motto etc and most importantly have kept a large number of the old supporters. This blog was started by me from the very beginnings of Scarborough Athletic FC and will follow the fortunes, both good and bad of the newly formed club as they try to get back to the higher levels of the football pyramid where they rightly belong. A rival team has also been formed 'Scarborough Town', I do not expect that particular club will have much of a future, but do they realise the damage that they are causing to the future success of football in the town, our town cannot support 2 teams, Athetic are here to stay, we are the town's number one football team and will return to the higher levels of the game in the next few seasons..

THIS BLOG WAS ESTABLISHED FROM THE BEGINNINGS OF SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC AND WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE CLUB ON THEIR JOURNEY BACK TO THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE. I AM NOT HERE TO ADVERTISE OR MAKE MONEY FROM 3RD PARTY LISTINGS, I AM HERE TO SIMPLY FOLLOW THE CLUB AND TRY TO KEEP THIS BLOG AS INTERESTING AS POSSIBLE. COMMENTS ARE WELCOME.

REMEMBER JIMMY ROLLO ?

AFTER COMING ACROSS A SITE NAMED (RUNBOARD.COM) WHICH ALSO HAS A SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC FORUM INVITING FANS TO WRITE ABOUT THEIR MEMORIES OF THE OLD SCARBOROUGH CLUB AND THEIR FAVOURITE PLAYERS ETC.
I ENTERED MY FAVOURITE PLAYERS AND NAMED WHO I THOUGHT TO BE THE BEST MANAGER.
AS THE MEMORIES CAME FLOODING BACK, I DECIDED TO TRY AND FIND OUT A BIT ABOUT SOME OF THOSE OLD PLAYERS AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING NOW.
THE FIRST ONE I CHOSE WAS GOALKEEPER 'JIMMY ROLLO'-JIMMY PLAYED FOR US IN OUR MIDLAND LEAGUE DAY'S OF THE 1960's.
HE WAS, AND PROBARBLY STILL IS A LARGER THAN LIFE CHARACTER, AND HE ALWAYS HAD PLENTY TO SAY WHILE PLAYING. HE WAS EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE AT THE OLD "ATHLETIC GROUND" BACK THEN.
JIMMY WAS BORN LESS THAN 50 MILES FROM JOHN O' GROATS AND WAS A BAKER/CONFECTIONER BY TRADE.
HE SIGNED AS A PRO' GOALKEEPER FOR OLDHAM ATHLETIC IN 1960 AND REMAINED AT BOUNDARY PARK UNTIL 1963, HE HAD STIFF OPPOSITION FOR FIRST TEAM APPEARENCES FROM TWO OTHER OUTSTANDING GOALKEEPERS JOHN HARDIE AND JOHNNY BOLLAND. IN HIS THIRD SEASON WHICH WAS ALSO ATHLETIC'S PROMOTION SEASON JIMMY MADE ONLY 10 FIRST TEAM APPEARENCES, HE EVENTUALLY LEFT AND PLAYED FOR SOUTHPORT AND BRADFORD BEFORE JOINING SCARBOROUGH TOWARDS THE END OF THE DECADE.
I REMEMBER HIM WELL, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS'NT AT THE CLUB FOR TOO LONG A PERIOD OF TIME, HE WAS A GREAT CHARACTER, I WONDER HOW MANY OTHER FANS REMEMBER HIM.
UNFORTUNATELY IN LATER LIFE JIMMY DID NOT HAVE THE BEST OF LUCK, HE LOST HIS RIGHT LEG IN AN ACCIDENT IN 1989, BUT HE DID MAKE A REMARKABLE RECOVERY AND MOVED BACK TO HIS NATIVE SCOTLAND.
WHEN HE REGAINED HIS STRENGTH HE DECIDED TO TRAVEL THE WORLD, BUT MORE BAD LUCK WAS TO HAMPER JIMMY AS HE SUFFERED A MINOR STROKE IN 2004 WHICH RESULTED IN HIM LOSING HIS EYESIGHT.
THIS MUST HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFICULT FOR A SPORTSMAN LIKE JIMMY TO COME TO TERMS WITH, BUT COME TO TERMS WITH IT HE DID AND ACCORDING TO HIS DAUGHTER HE IS STRONG IN SPIRIT AND BUSY KEEPING HIS TWO GRANDAUGHTERS MESMERISED WITH HIS STORIES.

GOOD LUCK JIMMY AND THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES......
