REWARD FOR FANS.
SCARBOROUGH Athletic’s promotion success at the weekend is a fantastic reward for the club’s faithful fans.
In just their second campaign in the Northern Counties East League first division, the new Boro have clinched a move up to the NCEL top flight - with hopefully the title to follow in the next week. It’s a far cry from the painful demise of the old Scarborough FC, who folded in 2007 to end 128 years of football history in the town.
Those bitter days for Boro fans - who lost not only their club but also the McCain Stadium ground - and after all the low times nobody can doubt their right to celebrate this season’s success. Despite having to make the 36-mile round trip to watch the club’s home matches at Bridlington ’s Queensgate ground, an average of 450 Boro supporters have roared on the side to promotion glory.
A good number of those have also backed the team in away games. The club, despite playing out of town, have done Scarborough proud and so have their fans. Now let’s make it a double celebration for 2008-09 with our other team - Scarborough Town - ending their debut season in the Teesside League second division with a winning campaign. After the footballing gloom of 2007, that would be something for all to celebrate.
Scarborough Athletic manager Brian France hailed his sides team spirit and the clubs fantastic support as the main factors in winning promotion to the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.
A 2-1 win at Teversal- the scene of the fan owned clubs first ever game in existence just 19 months ago gave Boro the three point's needed to secure a place in the top flight next season and France was quick to praise fans and players, who celebrated the success together.
A delighted France said "The club has a real feel-good factor about it, and the fans deserve this promotion for their amazing support all season.
Manager Brian France is insisting the job is not yet done as Boro look to seal the NCEL division one title this week.
"We've had plenty to celebrate this weekend with promotion, but we now want the title as well- then it will be a job well done", said France.
They need just four more points to ensure they finish as champions.
Their only title rivals Askern Villa play tonight at Leeds Carnegie and Boro host Brighouse Town tommorow night, and Yorkshire Amateur on Saturday as they bid to win the town's first piece of silverware since Neil Warnock's legendary 1987 team won promotion into the football league.
