While I obviously would love to see England lift the trophy and be crowned world champions, my head tells me that Italy have a great chance themselves, but I cannot understand why they are a massive 16/1 with the bookies to win the trophy, these are fantastic odds.
The Italian's have arguably the best goalkeeper in the world in 'Buffon' and most of the names just roll off the tongue, the likes of 'Cannavaro' with 133 caps, 'Zambrotta' with 93 caps, 'Gattuso', who is to retire from international football after the world cup has notched up 72 caps, other players include 'De Rossi', 'Zambrotta', and 'Pirlo', the whole squad practically are household names and they are capable of some exhilerating football and of course once they are in the front in a game then we all know how frustrating the opposition become trying to get through their defence trying to get back into the game.
As for England, I think we have 3 excellent goalkeepers and I am really happy that Jamie Carragher was persuaded to return to the international scene, as his presence in the defence will make such a difference, I hope that Stevie Gerrard has a good world cup, just to prove a point to the growing list of his doubters, we have a good midfield and excellent strikers, opposing defences will not relish having to face Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch or even Emile Heskey, so realistically I could possibly see us reaching the semi final stage and once there anything is possible during that 90 minutes of football with a place in the world cup final the prize for victory.
How will England play in their opening group stages, I will take a guess at the three results, I think the USA game could end 1-1, we will beat Algeria 3-0 and I will go for a narrow 1 goal victory over Slovenia, I really can't wait to see some decent football in 3 weeks time when Scarborough Athletic play their first pre-season friendly.
