The League had previously deducted the points for the appearances of Joe Lightowler, Darren Phillips and Craig Hogg in games whilst they were suspended. At today’s hearing in Leeds, Boro were represented by Simon Cope, John Clarke and Patrick Waterhouse. A three man FA appeal panel heard Boro’s formal appeal at the West Riding FA’s headquarters in Woodlesford.Boro’s team explained that the club had exercised reasonable endeavours to ensure that the players were eligible and that, in Craig Hogg’s case, he had not been notified of his own suspension due to the disbanding of his previous club. The panel acknowledged that these cases had identified certain issues within the player registration system. The NCEL also agreed that there had been difficulties with the system early in the season. However the panel based its decision on the correct actions taken by the league in the registration of the 3 players. The NCEL’s original punishment of a £300 fine and a points deduction was upheld. Boro will also have to meet the costs of the hearing.Boro Chairman Simon Cope said “We are naturally disappointed at the outcome but we received a fair hearing. Although we did all required of us in the registration of these players we have now introduced additional checks to en FA Panel rejects Boro’s casesure that we reduce the risk of this happening again.”
