We go back to Easter Monday 1949 and as Scarborough FC were playing Gainsborough Trinity, thieves had got into the changing rooms.
The robbery took place during the first half, while Boro' who were 3rd from bottom of the Midland League were holding league leaders Gainsborough Trinity very creditably.
The robbery was discovered at half time, money, watches, cigarette lighters and fountain pens were missing. The pockets of all the Boro' players had been rifled, the referee and linesman were victims too and only the Gainsborough changing room was left untouched.
Scarborough goalkeeper Cyril Hannaby lost the key to his fish and chip shop in Doncaster and his return train ticket home. Bill Parke, the captain had his return train ticket to York also taken, and Dennis Kirby lost his return ticket to Leeds.
A tanoy announcement asked for Detective-Officer Bond, who was among the 3,500 crowd at the game.
There were few clues, no sign of a break in. The thieves had probably sneaked in through the main doors and reached the changing rooms by the main passage.
It was disconcerting for the Scarborough players, who had the 2nd half to play. On the field they were robbed of victory too. After taking the lead late in the game, they conceded an own goal with the last kick of the match.
Boro's 1-1 draw was their best performance of the season, but it was an afternoon of mixed feelings.
But what a great crowd for a struggling Midland league team.
UP THE BORO !
